Abstract

508,944. Butanediols. JOHNSON, G. W. (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Dec. 24, 1937, No. 35688. [Class 2 (iii)] Butanediol-1,4 and its derivatives containing two hydroxy groups are prepared by hydrogenating butine-2-diols-1,4 in the liquid phase in the presence of nickel, copper, cobalt or silver catalysts. Metal oxides may be added to the catalysts which may be applied to 'carriers. .Examples are given of the preparation of butanediol-1,4 and of its 1,1,4,4-tetramethyl derivative using a nickel catalyst prepared by dissolving out aluminium by means of caustic soda from an alloy of aluminium and nickel. Specification 508,062 is referred to.
