Abstract

508,890. Universal joints. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO., Ltd., and BROCK, D. T. March 21, 1938, No. 8679. [Class 65 (ii)] A ball joint comprising a housing 10, a stud 14 having a part spherical surface engaging a corresponding surface 16 formed within the housing and a spring-urged thrust member 19, has a spherical ball 18 located between the stud and thrust member. The ball may be accommodated in a recess formed in the stud or thrust member which may be deep enough to cover more than half the ball. The top lip of the recess may be burred over to retain the ball. The stud may be fitted with a relatively rotatable bush 15. In a modification, Fig. 4, the part-spherical surface 29 is arranged to extend on both sides of a full diametral plane 30 so that when the stud is at its maximum obliquity the thrust applied to the socket in a direction 31 acts through the centre of the ball 18 and does not tend to displace the stud. The joint may be lubricated through an opening 26 and dust may be excluded by a cover 25.
