Abstract

508,835. Electric welding. BERGHAUS, B. Nov. 29, 1938, Nos. 34803 and 34804. Convention dates, Nov. 29, 1937, and Aug. 3, 1938. [Class 39 (iii)] [Also in Group XXII] In a resistance spot or seam welding process, a welding transformer is used on each side of the double sheet 14, 15 to be welded, the primary windings 4, 5 being connected to the same generator 3, whilst the secondary windings 8; 9 are connected in series through the electrodes 10, 12, 13, 11 and the welding material. A frequency of 1000 to 20,000 cycles is used. An electromagnet or blocks of iron 18, 20, which may also serve as the transformer cores, may be arranged between the electrodes to deflect and minimize the transverse currents. Alternatively, current carrying metal sheets may be arranged between the electrodes, or the primary windings of each transformer may be arranged close to the metal surfaces, for the same purpose.
