Abstract

508,765. Motor-cycles. VOIGT, C. A. Oct. 18, 1938, No. 30090. Convention date, Oct. 18, 1937. [Classes 79 (iii) and 136 (iii)] In a motor-cycle, a simple frame carrying the motor, driving-mechanism, seat &c. is disposed in a plane substantially perpendicular to the plane of the wheels, and is provided with an inclined spring suspension so arranged that the rear wheel can spring in a direction inclined to the vertical ; the frame is preferably perpendicular to this inclined direction of spring- ing. In the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the frame consists of a forked member 3 downwardly inclined from the head 1, and having a cross-strut 4 provided. with a guide 5 to receive a saddle support 6, to which is attached an adjustable lever 11 carrying a foot-rest 8. The front wheel axle 17 has a telescopic spring- mounting 18 on the fork 2, and the rear wheel axle 13 is carried by a looped member 15 sliding resiliently in inclined guides 12 on the ends of the frame 3, the angle of springing being substantially perpendicular to the inclined frame 3. The motor 19, gear 20, and fuel tank 25 are secured to the frame 3, and may be formed in a single block attached to the frame by two spaced elastic mountings, the cylinder head hanging downwards and the cylinder axis being approximately parallel to the direction of springing of the wheels. The drive may comprise a cardan shaft 21 and one or more elastic couplings 22, 23, or a chain may be employed. In a modification, the frame consists of a single front member attached to a looped rear member to which the guides 12 of the rear wheel mounting are secured. In another form, the rear wheel is carried in a forwardly and upwardly inclined fork pivoted at the end of the main frame and controlled by a torsion spring at the pivot. In a further modification, the rear wheel is carried between the rear ends of a pair of double-armed levers, the front arms of which extend forward beyond the pivotal connection to the main frame and carry the motor and associated parts, the front ends being connected to rubber springs acting in shear.
