Abstract

508,516. Drying-oils. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP INDUSTRIEELE MAATSCHAPPIJ VOORHEEN NOURY & VAN DER LANDE. Jan. 1, 1938, No. 52. Convention date, Jan. 6, 1937. [Class 91] Drying-oils are made by treating oils containing a hydroxy fatty acid group with a catalyst consisting of fuming sulphuric acid, sulphur trioxide, permono-sulphuric acid, pyrosulphuric acid or salts of these, whereby water is split off. In examples, castor oil or the triglyceride of hydroxy stearic acid obtained by hydrogenating castor oil, is heated under vacuum with a small amount of potassium persulphate or pyrosulphate while slowly raising the temperature to 240‹ C. The catalyst is removed by filtration and the resulting oil may be further heated to 280‹ C. to form a polymerized stand oil.
