Abstract

507,812. Applying closures. AMERICAN CAN CO. July 15, 1938, No. 21024. Convention date, July 21, 1937. [Class 125 (ii)] A machine for inserting a closure element into a fibre container comprises means for inserting the closure element and further means for expanding the same whilst the container is moved continuously. The containers b, Fig. 2, with hinged closures e still open, are fed from the filling machine A to the continuously rotating turret head B, where they are guided under an inclined member 41 which presses the closure e into the aperture c. The closed containers are transferred to the mechanism C comprising seating-heads D, Fig. 5. The container is here supported on a resilient pad 58 in a pair of turret heads 46, and gripped by an arm 67 which is cam-actuated and is lowered when the turret has turned to the discharging position. The sealing head D, (see also Fig. 10), comprises members 103 slidably mounted in grooves, and embraced by a coil spring 108 ; the members 103 have fingers at their inner ends which engage the inner periphery of the fibre closure e; the members 103 are actuated by descent of the central rod 87 having a coned lower end, to expand the periphery of the cap e and seal it. The sealing-mechanism, Fig. 5, rotates continuously about, a central column 51 which carries a fixed cam member 97. The cam groove 96 descends at the sealing-position, thus lowering the cam slide 85; slidably mounted within the cam slide 85 is the sealing head D which is therefore lowered until projections thereon come into contact with the member 46, further lowering of the cam slide 85 then compresses the spring 91 and forces the rod 87 into the sealing-head D, thereby effecting sealing as described above. After sealing, the head D is raised, the retaining arm 67 swung clear, and the container discharged by guide rails 124, 126, Fig. 2, by the star wheel 115 on to an endless conveyer belt 131 for inspection and delivery. Specification 470,098 is referred to.
