Abstract
507,264. Elastic - fluid turbines. KOHLER, G., and BRAGARD, T. May 19, 1938, No. 14977. [Class 110 (iii)] The rotor 4 of a radial-flow turbine may be moved axially until the fixed and moving blades are unmeshed so as to facilitate the removal of the upper half of the casing 1. Spaces 8 are left between the rotor discs 5 and the unbladed sides of 'the guide discs. The space behind the last disc may be sealed by a labyrinth packing 7 and used as an end thrust balancing device. In a modification, Fig. 4, the front of the first rotor disc is fitted with a labyrinth packing and used as an end thrust balancing device; this arrangement lessens the leakage across the gland 9. The guide and rotor discs may be made integral with the casing and rotor shaft, the guide discs having radial expansion joints and being bolted together in a plane at right-angles to the turbine axis, to prevent casing distortion.
