Abstract

506,787. Tempering glass ; cradles for lifting and lowering. GILT EDGE SAFETY GLASS, Ltd., GROTEFELD, A. W., and SHAW, J. J. Aug. 26, 1937, No. 13205/39. Divided out of 506,723. [Class 56] [Also in Group XXX] A device for supporting glass sheets during tempering comprises a number of sets of abutments arranged one above another and adapted to support a number of glass sheets arranged vertically above one another, each set of abutments being adapted to engage the lower edge of a sheet at a number of points and to support it without deformation during heating. The device comprises a supporting strip 29, Fig. 2, provided with rollers which run along an overhead rail 27, and a number of supporting cradles 30 suspended from the strip 29. Each cradle 30 is composed of a wire 31, Fig. 3, which is bent into elongated U-shape and is again bent to form a number of loops 32 each of which receives and supports a glass sheet. The lower end 33 of each loop serves as an abutment for supporting a glass sheet, while the upper edge of the sheet is engaged and supported by a notch 36 in a metal piece 34 that slides on the wire 31. The cradles are supported from the strip 29 by turn buckles 37 which are adjusted to equalize the pressure exerted by the abutments 33 on the lower edges of the sheets. The loops or eyes 38 at the lower ends of the cradles may be engaged by loops 39 on a wire 40 to minimize relative movement between the cradles. In a modified construction, the abutments may be composed of metal pieces similar to the pieces 34 and secured to the sides of the cradle. The abutments may also be made of porcelain. In another construction, the cradles are formed of metal strips 30, Fig. 5, and the abutments are composed of levers 41 pivoted between the strips and carrying at their ends forked members 42 which engage the lower edges of the glass sheet. Specifications 449,602, 449,864, 473,065, 473,066, 506,723, and 506,724 are referred to.
