[Class 22] [Also in Group III] A self-setting composition for heat and sound insulating purposes, consists of a slurry of calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate prepared by carbonating a suspension of calcined dolomite in water and removing excess water as by decantation. The magnesium carbonate is obtained in the form of fine crystals hy carbonating at about 20-40‹ C., whilst agitating, excess carbon dioxide being avoided so that no magnesium bicarbonate is obtained, e.g. by using an open vessel and waste gases having a low carbon dioxide content. The setting is accelerated by heating the moulds preferably to 60-90‹ C., for example by placing the moulds in a chamber containing steam. After setting the products are removed from the moulds and dried at 70-200‹ C. Fillers such as asbestos, diatomaceous earth may be incorporated in the slurry. The product is normally porous but a more dense product may be obtained by applying pressure during the wetting.
