Abstract
505,891. Grinding; milling. ROWLAND & CO., Ltd., F. E., and TAYLOR, H. Oct. '13,1937, No. 27773. [Class 60] [Also in Group XXII] A grinding, polishing, milling, or other machine comprises a bed 1 upon which are slidably mounted two headstocks 4, 5 acted upon by weights 23, each headstock being adjustable by rack and worm gearing 6 .. 9 operated by a hand wheel 10. Slidably mounted on each headstock is a housing 11 in which is mounted, in ball bearings 12, a spindle 13 carrying a grinding-wheel or other tool 14, each spindle being belt driven from a pulley 16 on the respective end of a main shaft 2. Each housing has thereon a lug 11a in which is pivoted a lever 17 adjustably carrying a weight 18 and having an arm bearing against the respective headstock, the housing thus being urged outwards to hold a projection 20 thereon against the upper end of a lever 19 pivoted to the headstock. The other end of each lever rests on an elongated eccentric 21 on a shaft 22, the two shafts 22 being aligned and each carrying a sprocket 26 to which one end of a chain 27 is connected, the other ends of the respective'chains being secured to a lever 28 pivotally connected at its centre to a treadle 29. Depression of the treadle thus moves the housings 11, the movement being independent of the adjustment of the headstocks, and the lever arrangement 28 ensuring that if one wheel 14 contacts with the work, which is mounted by a vice &c. between the wheels, before the other wheel, this latter will move more rapidly to grinding position. Stops 32 on the headstocks are adjusted so that the required movement of the wheels &c. 14 has taken place when the stops are engaged by brackets 33 on the housings 11. One only of the headstocks may be adjustable, the chain and lever device 27, 28 may be replaced by differential gearing, and the levers 19 and eccentrics 21 may be replaced by rotary mechanism; more than two wheels &c. 14 may be employed. According to the Provisional Specification, the headstocks may be integral with, or permanently attached to the bed.
