Abstract

504,901. Electrical precipitation apparatus. LODGE-COTTRELL, Ltd. (International Precipitation Co., Inc.) Oct. 28, 1938, No. 31284. [Class 39 (i)] In the electrical precipitation of suspended particles from gases by the use of an ionizing field followed by a precipitating field, a final additional ionizing field is provided to precipitate agglomerated particles, carried off from the previous collecting electrodes by the gas stream. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the treating apparatus comprises a tubular casing 10 forming the collecting electrode and having inlet and outlet headers 11 and 14 for the gas. The spatially separated fields are provided by a central high tension electrode 23, preferably of square section twisted wire, carrying at its lower end a short length of straight wire 24 and shrouded about its intermediate part by a shield 25, preferably hollow, leaving a part 23a within the tubular casing, 10 unshrouded. The electrode is supported in an insulating bushing secured in an opening in the header 14 of slightly larger size by a flanged ring 20 and rubber gasket 21 to allow adjustments for centring. In a modification, Fig. 3, the collecting electrodes 40 are of the plate type, and the separate fields are provided by wire electrodes 41, 43, and an extended electrode 42. The potentials applied to the high tension electrodes. may be the same or different, and the collecting electrode may be made in insulated sections corresponding to the separate fields and have different potentials applied to the sections.
