Abstract

504,278. Hydraulic transmission of power. SOC. ANON. DES ATELIERS GAMAIN. Oct. 19, 1937, Nos. 28475, 28476, 28477, and 28478. Convention dates, Oct. 19, 1936, March 1, 1937, July 16, 1937, and Oct. 6, 1937. [Class 69 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXIV] Hydraulic transmission particularly for brakes comprises a device in each conduit leading to the brakes arranged to close this conduit from the rest of the system in case of leakage and also adapted to adjust the system for wear. The device comprises a piston 2 containing valves which provide communication between the pipe 17 connected to the master cylinder and the pipe 12 connected to the brake when the piston is at the end of its cylinder 1 nearest the brakes when the pressure difference between the two pipes does not exceed a predetermined value. The piston 2 is forced from one end of the cylinder 1 to the other at each brake application and if wear has occurred the piston stroke increases and a hollow rod 8 engages the end of the cylinder, opens a valve 6 and allows liquid to pass through the piston, to take up the wear. If leakage occurs in the pipe 12, pressure above a piston 14 drops to zero and the pressure below this piston transmitted from the master cylinder via a passage 18 raises the piston and closes the conduit 12 by means of a valve 13. The valve 13 will remain on its seat after release of the brakes if a slight pressure is maintained on the fluid in conduit 17. In a modification, when leakage occurs the rod 8 abuts the end of the cylinder, opens the valve 6, causes cups 26, 27 to abut and holds the valve 5 on its seat to close off the conduit 12. In a further modification the ball valves and cups are replaced by a single ball valve pressed towards the rod 8 by a spring and in a still further modification this ball is replaced by two valves telescoped together. This modification is adapted to release back to the master cylinder excess liquid which may have been forced to the brakes owing to expansion of the brake drums.
