Abstract

503,630. Hollow rollers. SIMON, W. G., and SIMON, F. R. Oct. 30, 1937, No. 29732. [Class 34 (i)] A heating, cooling, or drying cylinder for paper-making or flaking machines has closely spaced inner and outer circumferential walls 1, 2 forming between them an annular cavity 3 for the heating or cooling fluid communicating by holes 4 at one end with the interior 5 of the cylinder, whence fluid passes at the same end through a duct 14 in the journal 10 to an outlet 20 ; fluid entering by a duct 13 in the same journal passes by a tube 16 extending across the cylinder to a cavity 7 between an end wall 8 and an inner wall 9 spaced slightly therefrom and enters the annular space 3 by holes 6 in the wall 2. The other journal 11 has a hollow space 17 communicating with the cavity 7 by holes 19 in the end wall 8, one opening being opposite the tube 16, which is off-set from the axis of rotation. A radial air release pipe' 23 closed at its inner end and open at its outer end 21 has a branch 24 extending through the cavity 7 to an outlet boring 22 in the journal 11, which has an air tap which is open until fluid begins to issue therefrom.
