503,149. Stuffing -box substitutes. VARIABLE SPEED GEAR, Ltd., and INGOLDBY, M. K. Oct. 1, 1937, No. 26639. [Class 122 (v)] In a shaft packing comprising a ring 17 pressed axially by fluid pressure and a spring 21 into contact with a radial surface 14 on the shaft, the total area 21, 27 subjected to liquid pressure is not less than a half of, but less than the area' 22 of the sealing face. A cup packing 23 expanded by liquid pressure or by a slotted U-shaped spring is arranged between the ring 17 and the casing. Specifications 503,148 and 503,150, [both in Group XXVIII], are referred to.
