Abstract

503,113. Screw fans. WOODS, Ltd., M. W., and DALY, B. B. J'an. 4, 1938, No. 246. [Class 110 (i)] An outlet duct 2 for a ventilating fan 1 consists of a rightangle bend with one or more vanes 3, 4 so shaped and pivoted 'that in one position they close the duct and in another position they follow the course of the bend and subdivide it radially. The bend may converge towards the outlet by forming the inner wall circular and the outer wall elliptical. The vanes are pivoted at 5, 6 so that they close by gravity when the fan is at rest and are opened by the fan current. Alternately the vanes may be actuated by levers or belt gearing coupled to the motor switch. To prevent clattering when the fan is at rest, catches may be used to hold the vanes closed. They may consist of spring balls, latches, or magnets and may be automatically closed but released by means linked to the motor switch or circuit or by an auxiliary vane actuated by the fan current.
