Sept. 2, 1937, No. 24056. 2 (iii)] Emulsions from which continuous films arc obtainable by evaporat ion are prepared by subjecting an aqueous emulsion of methyl methacrylate to polymerizing conditions, i.e. to the action of heat, light, or polymerization catalysts, or to two or more of these agencies, with the introduction before, during, or after polymerization of 35- 80 per cent of a plasticizer or softening agent reckoned upon the combined weights of the polymerized methyl methacrylate and the plasticizer. Emulsifying agents, colouring materials, fillers and thickening agents, e.g. sodium alginate, a water-soluble cellulose ether, or gum tragacanth, may be present. A small quantity of a water-miscible swelling agent, e.g. methyl alcohol, may be added to the ester before polymerization. Specified plasticizers are dibutyl phthalate, dibutyl tartrate, tricresyl phosphate, triphenyl phosphate, benzyl benzoate, amyl stearate, glycerol tribenzoate, triacetin camphor and alpha-gammadicresyl ether of glycerin. In an example, a hot solution of sodium isobutyl naphthalene sulphonate is added to a solution of dibutyl phthalate and benzoyl peroxide in methyl methacrylate and the mixture heated under reflux. The emulsions may be used for the preparation of films, the treatment and bending of textiles, the dressing of leather, paper and wood, the coating of metal, and the preparation of water paints. Specifications 358,534 and 437,446 are referred to. According to the Provisional Specification, esters in general of methacrylic acid are used, and the proportion of plasticizer is at least 40 per-cent-reckoned on the weight of the ester.
