501,320. Spindle mountings for grinding-machines. SOC. GENEVOISE D'INSTRUMENTS DE PHYSIQUE. May 16,1938, No. 14520. Convention date, March 31. [Class, 60] [Also in Group XXII] A work or tool spindle for a grinding-machine or a screw cutting lathe is provided with means whereby displacement of the work or tool due to expansion of the spindle by heat generated during working, is prevented. The spindle comprises a hollow body portion 1a, and a nose portion 1b carrying a grinding-wheel 2 or the work and is provided with a conical journal 3 and a cylindrical journal 4 running respectively in a conical bushing 5 and a bushing 6 in a spindle support 7. A spring 8 lies between the bushing 5 and a thrust ball bearing 9 adjoining the driving pulley 10 secured to the spindle, the spring tending to the push the spindle to the right. The nose of the spindle carries a screw 11 with a small flat surface 12 bearing against a rod 13 extending axially of, and slidably keyed in the spindle, the other end of the rod bearing against the end 16 of an adjustable screw in the support 7. The rod 13 is made of material non-expansible thermally or having a very small coeffioient of thermal expansion ; the small expansion of the rod may be compensated for by the expansion of the part L<1> of the spindle lying between the surface 12 and the central plane of the wheel 2; the rod may comprise an alloy of iron and nickel. The rod may be stationary, the screw 11 rotating relatively to the front end of the rod.
