Abstract

501,052. Carpet-sweepers. WAGNER MFG. CO., E. R. July 19, 1937, No. 19968. Convention date, July 31, 1936. [Class 138 (i)] In a carpet-sweeper comprising a casing supported by one or more pairs of floor wheels the stub axle of each of which is secured to an arm mounted for limited swinging and longitudinal sliding movement under the action of a spring which presses the floor wheels against the brush pulley, the spring is connected to the arm and is so constructed and arranged that it offers a stiff resistance to the longitudinal movement of the arm in the direction separating the wheel and pulley while it presents a relatively light resistance to vertical swinging movement of the arm. In the construction shown in Fig. 2, each floor wheel 12 is mounted on a stub axle 14 which is fastened to an arm 15. The arm has a pin-and-slot engagement with the end wall 1 of the casing and the pivotal movement of the arm,is limited by an outwardly-displaced poition 18 of a bracket plate 16 secured to the end wall. The floor wheels are pressed against the brush pulley 31 by a spring 21 of the form shown. The brush pulley is mounted at each end on a trunnion 39, Fig. 4, which is fixed to a strip 40. The strip 40 is supported for vertical sliding movement in a guideway formed by displacing inwardly a lower portion of a metal end plate 7 and displacing out-. wardly an upper portion of the plate, a slot being formed between the two portions. The strip 40 is pressed downwardly by means of a spring 47. In a modification shown in Fig. 10, the brush trunnion 92 is carried by a horizontal resilient strip 89 having hooked ends 90 extending through slots 91 in the end plate 86. The ends 90 are engaged by the ends of a spring 93. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect 91 comprises also an arrangement in which two brush-clearing combs 56, Fig. 7 (Cancelled), are pivotally mounted near the upper part of the brush. Dust-pans 51 are held normally in closed position by means of a spring 53. The floor wheels may be pressed towards the brush pulley by a spring at each end of the casing, the ends of the spring engaging in notches formed in links which are pivoted on the stub axles of the wheels. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
