[Class 51 (i)] [Also in Group XI] A gas-burning grate to take' the place of a solid fuel grate in furnaces, ovens, boilers and the like comprises a common supply pipe 2 from which gas passes at substantially equal pressure to a plurality of upwardlyprojecting cylindrical nozzles 5, having a truncated' conical orifice 7 opening into the shallow dished upper end or cap 6, for directing jets of gas into corresponding Venturi or tumblershaped openings 8 in a heat - resisting plate or grating, the gas there becoming intimately admixed with air and burning adjacent a refractory member, which becomes intensely heated. The refractory tile 14, Figs. 1 and 2, is supported on brackets 15 on the plate 10 and has an overhanging portion 13 for projecting the flames and hot gases towards the furnace wall 1. For a sectional boiler, Fig. 4, the nozzles 5 are arranged in two parallel rows below openings 8 in the sid'es of a plate 26 supporting refractory tiles 28 having overhanging portions 29. Three sets of burners 32, 34, 35, Fig. 6, are provided for vertical steam boilers, the refractory tiles being supported on brackets 37, 38. The gas supply may be thermostatically controlled, and an air cavity may be provided in the flue connection to the chimney to prevent inflow of air when the gas supply is cut off. A damper may be mechanically or electrically controlled in accordance with gas pressure, furnace temperature or the position of the gas cock to control the air supply.
