[Classes 97 (i) and 98 (ii)] In apparatus in which a continuously moved picture film or band is directly viewed the shutter is driven by frictional contact with the picture band and comprises an opaque band having transverse slots. The picture band may be of paper on one or both sides of which the pictures are printed, e.g. by heliogravure in their chronological order. As shown the picture band 1 is fed from a spool 6, one end of which engages a bearing 8 in a removable cover 7 and is taken up on a spool 3. A transversely-slotted continuous band shutter 17 engages the film over a part a of the spool 3 and is continuously driven thereby, the tension being maintained by a spring-pressed roller 20. Observation may be effected through a funnel 26 and a lens 33, a lamp 32 illuminating the band 1. A masking diaphragm 24 which may be adjustable in size, is vertically movable on guides 31 by a pinion 27 on a rotatable shaft engaging a rack 29, Fig. 2. Winding and rewinding of the band 1 are effected through a wheel 9 which is free on the shaft 5, and may be axially moved, either to engage teeth 10 to drive the spool 3 by a crossed belt 12, or to engage teeth 14 to drive the shaft 5 and rewind the band. The wheel 9 may be rotated manually by a handle 15 or driven by an electric motor 16. To exhibit the images on the other side of the band 1, the band is rewound on the spool 6 by driving the spool in the direction which is the reverse of that for normal rewinding ; the spool 5 is then removed and reinserted in the reversed position before threading. Two picture bands may be used for stereoscopic observation. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 the picture band may be of the type described in Belgian Specification 412,666, the shutter may be driven by engagement of fingers on a drum driven by the picture band with perforations to the shutter, and a projected image may be viewed on a ground glass screen in the casing. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
