498,559. Valves ; coffee-making appliances; heating water. LORCH, W. (Weintraud & Co., Ges.) Jan. 11, 1938, No. 933. [Class 135] [Also in Groups VI and XIII] A combined gas and water feed regulator for the steam generator of a coffee-making machine has a double armed lever 27 of which one end controls a water valve 28 in the feed pipe and the other end is operatively connected to a rod 48 actuated by a float 47 in the boiler 1 so that the water valve closes as the float ascends, and also has a spring-loaded diaphragm 24 subject to the boiler pressure and operatively connected to a gas supply valve 21 and to the water valve 28 so that the gas valve closes when the boiler pressure exceeds a certain value and the water valve closes if the boiler pressure falls below a certain value. The boiler 1 of the coffee making machine shown in Fig. 1 is supported by a ring 9 mounted on a jacket 10 and has a lid 2 carried by a hollow screw 7 which is received in the upper part 3 of a central shaft 5, the boiler and lid being held in place by a bolt 11. The screw 7 supports a safety valve 13, 14 arranged beneath an outer cover 15. The gas regulator housing 19 is connected to the burners 17 by a pipe 18 and has an adjustment screw 30 for the diaphragm loading spring 23. The diaphragm 24 is secured between the housing 19 and the water valve housing 20 the latter containing the lever 27 which has a pivot 33, the water valve seat member 31 which has an adjustable throttle 32, and a guide member 26 which is connected to the rod 48 and has sliding engagement with a piston 25 sitting loosely on the diaphragm 24. A spring 104 may assist the water pressure in opening the valve 28. The lever 27 has a little play in the guide 26 at one end and carries an adjustable screw 34 at the other end. The gas valve has a byepass controlled by an adjustable screw 103. The rod 48 passes through a riser pipe 37 connected to a housing 39 which has an extension 40 secured to the boiler by a nut 41. Pivoted at 43 in the housing 39 is a forked float lever 45 which engages a head 49 on the rod 48. The automatic regulation of the water valve 'can be suspended by a screw spindle 51. The coffee making machine comprises also a coffee brewing apparatus A and one or more storage vessels B. A fitting (not shown) for making small quantities is disposed in the middle of the boiler. The apparatus A comprises a glass measuring and brewing vessel 83 which is tightly clamped between a lid 84 and a ring 85, and a removable coffee holder 105 with sieves 89, 90. The vessel 83 is detachable from the holder 105 by a lever 88 with a spindle having quick pitch thread. The base of the holder is supported on a fitting 73 mounted on a bracket 75 by a screw 74. The fitting 73 contains a multiway rotary disc valve 80 which is adjustable by a handle 106. Hot water is supplied to the fitting 73 by a pipe 99 through a sludgecollecting filter unit 92 which traverses an inner protective jacket 16. The hot water passage 98, Fig. 3, in the fitting 73 has an adjustable throttle comprising a rotatable rod with a flat 100 at one end. The brewing time may by this means be kept constant when less than the maximum amount is brewed. The valve 80 is turned to admit hot water to the measured quantity of coffee in the holder. The hot water supply is then cut-off and steam admitted below the sieves to " draw " the brew and finally the valve 80 is turned to admit steam to the top of the measuring vessel and force the coffee through a pipe 52 to one or more of the storage vessels B in which it ascends through a central pipe 60 and passes through a bore 60a into a glass vessel 54 within a jacket 53. The space between the vessel 54 and the jacket 53 constitutes a water bath which has an overflow and is heated by steam passing a regulating valve 72. The parts 53, 54 are sealed against a member 55 and supported on a hollow bracket 59 by a screw 57 and the pipe 60 which carries a lid 62. A screw 61 may close the bore 60a to dispense with one of the storage vessels. A draw-off tap 70 with a gauge 68 and a removable valve member with a quick pitch thread is screwed into the member 55.
