498,491. Cathode-ray tubes. COSSOR (HOLDINGS), Ltd., A. C., (formerly COSSOR, Ltd., A. C.), SHELTON, E. E., and WILLIAMS, B. C. FLEMING-. July 9, 1937, No. 21503 /38. Divided out of 498,484. [Class 39 (i)] To prevent negative ions formed in the region of the cathode from impinging on the fluorescent screen in a hard vacuum cathoderay tube, a bias potential is applied between a pair of electrostatic deflector plates sufficient to deflect the ray off the screen and a magnetic field is also applied to nullify the effect of this deflection on the electrons in the ray and thereby direct them on the screen. The magnetic field may precede or follow the electrostatic field in relation to the beam or they may be coincident. The magnetic feld may be obtained by a permanent or electromagnet. The electrostatic field may be applied to those electrodes used for normal deflection or to separate plates.
