Abstract

498,395. Typewriters &c. BRITISH TABULATING MACHINE CO., Ltd. July 6, 1937, No. 18795. Convention date, July 7, 1936. [Class 100 (iv)] [Also in Group XIX] A record-card-controlled printing-machine comprises reciprocable type-carriers, a recordcard sensing device for controlling the movement of the carriers to printing position., printing hammers, one for each carrier, mechanism for tripping the hammers to cause printing, hammer locks, one for each hammer and each individually movable to a locking setting, and operating means, controlled by a special perforation in a record card, for rendering those thus set effective to lock their hammers. Each printing hammer 82, Figs. 6, 7, 8 and 9, has a shoulder 104 and is associated with a leaf spring latch 105 secured to a bar 106 oscillatably mounted on pins 110 journalled in the frame of the machine and carrying a pivot rod 107 for pairs of cam levers 108 and 109, a pair being provided for each latch 105 and associated printing hammer 82. The lever 108 has its cam surface at a slightly greater distance from the pivot 107 than the lever 109 and when rocked from the position shown in Fig. 6 to that in Fig. 7, will depress the latch 105 so that its free end lies in the path of the shoulder 104 of the printing hammer 82 which is thus locked for all operations of the machine. The lever 109 when rocked to the position shown in Fig. 8, will move the latch 105 so that its free end is positioned near the shoulder 104, but not near enough to stop the operation of the printing hammer 82. If however the bar 106 is now rocked in a counterclockwise direction the latch 105 will be positioned to cooperate with the shoulder 104 and lock the printing hammer 82. The bar 106 is rocked through the bracket 111 to which is pivoted a link 112 connected at its lower end to an arm 113 normally held in the position shown in Fig. 2 by the armature 114 of a pair of magnets 115 which are energized under the control of a special perforation X, Fig. 11, in the " 11 " under point position of a record-card, to allow clockwise rotation of the arm 113 and rocking of the bar 106 through the mechanism 117, 118, 119, 120 controlled by the complementary cams 121 serving to reciprocate the type heads 13 once in each cycle of the machine. The printing mechanism may be substantially identical with that described in Specification 425,838 under record-card control as described in Specifications 216,142, [Class 100 (iv)], and 448,445, [Group XIX]. The printing hammers are controlled in substantially the same manner as described in Specifications 375,889, [Group XIX], and 376,302.
