Abstract

496,845. Modulating systems. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd., MOODEY, L. T., and STAINES, C. R. Dec. 23, 1937, No. 35676. [Class 40 (v)] A modulation system of the floating carrier type employs a valve V having at least three grids, one of which, G2, acts as a screen. Carrier frequency from terminals CT is applied to grid G1, and grid G3 on the other side of the screen is connected to the cathode through resistance R3 a bias source B2, both shunted by condensers C2, C3, and condenser C5. Modulation potentials are applied at terminals MT across the series circuit formed by R3 and B2 and a unidirectional potential, obtained in any convenient manner, varying in dependence upon the modulating potential level is applied from terminals FCT across condenser C5. Output is taken from the carrier frequency tuned circuit C1, L1. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown) the control potential only is applied to grid G3 and the modulation is applied in the anode circuit. The floating carrier control potential may be obtained from the modulation potentials after amplification by means of a full-wave rectifier, Fig. 3 (not shown), the resultant potential being amplified in a D.C. amplifier whose anode resistance is connected across the terminals FCT.
