Abstract
496,383. Brakes. BRETTELL, F. G. (Bendix Aviation Corporation) March 25, 1937, No. 8786. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Nov. 5,'1937.] [Class 103 (i)] A brake-applying means comprises an applying member acting at right angles to the brake backing plate on a pair of rocking operating members each adapted to roll on a surface or part that is wedge-like or inclined to the direction of movement of the applying member, the rolling surface of the operating member being limited to that part of a roller which corresponds to the movement of the applying member. In Figs. 1 and 3, a pair of floating shoes 216 connected at the lower ends by an adjustable link, anchor on the part 228 of a member 226 by plates 230 welded to the rims of the shoes. The member 226 is secured by bolts 250 to the back plate 212. The shoes are expanded by a pair of links 234 pivotally engaging spool-shaped members 232 slotted to engage the shoe ends and having arc-shaped ends bearing on a wedge 236 operated by a cable 238 passing through the back plate. A channel-section member 240 secured to the wedge embraces the web and links to keep them in alignment. The casing 242 for the cable is received in a socket 244. In Fig. 5, a wedgemember 268 engaging arc-shaped ends of links 270 is operated by a piston 264 and rod 266 in a hydraulic cylinder 258 bolted to the back plate 212. The lower ends of the shoes in this case engage thrust rods 272, Fig. 7, slidable in a housing 274 secured to the back plate and having bevelled ends bearing on the toothed conical face of a member 276 screwed into the housing and which can be turned to adjust the shoes.
