Abstract
496,087. Airscrews. FONDANAICHE, R. J. Feb. 14, 1938, No. 4615. Convention date, Feb. 13, 1937. [Class 114] The gear producing variation of pitch of an airscrew includes tubular shaft which is longitudinally movable within the propeller hub. The tubular shaft 6 which is longitudinally movable in a hub 4 is keyed thereto so as to be relatively non-rotatable and at its outer end carries helical splines 23 which engage a nut member 24 mounted for rotation but not longitudinal motion. Rotation of the nut 24 is communicated to a bevel wheel 26 which gears with a bevel wheel 27 on the blade root. This drive may be supported at an intermediate point upon ball races in the propeller hub. The inner end of the tube carries a sleeve 10 which is coupled to another sleeve 31 through ball members 11, 11a this latter sleeve 31 being secured to a tube 9 which is given longitudinal motion by reason of rotation of a nut upon an outer thread 22. The nut is provided with an outer set of teeth 20 which gear with a worm 19 on the shaft of an actuating mechanism such as an electric motor. Normally the sleeve 9 is stationary whilst the sleeve 6 rotates with the propeller and this is permitted by reason of the ball race connection 11. The combined tubes 6 and 9 pass through the final drive member 2 of the gear reduction from the driving engine.
