Abstract

495,977. Aerials; directive wireless signalling. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. June 11, 1937, No. 16278. Convention date, July 21, 1936. [Class 40 (v)] The ends of the inner and outer conductors 1, 2 of a coaxial transmission line are flaredout as shown at 3 in Fig. 3, so that the radiation-resistance matches the surge impedance of the line. Energy then radiates from them as from an aerial. The optimum relation between the radii of the two conductors and the working wavelength is set out in the Specification. The ratio of the two radii should be constant along the length of the transmission line. A parabolic or other reflector may be used to concentrate the radiation in a desired direction. The reflector 4, 4<1> consists of two paraboloids intersecting at Z<1>, and produces a uniform field in the horizontal plane. The field may be given a downward inclination by setting the radiator 3 to one side of the focus. In Fig. 4, the radiator 3 and reflector 4 are mounted on a platform 7 set on a tower 6 over the transmitter house 5. A screen 8 protects the radiator from rain &c. The installation is particularly suitable for broadcasting television programmes.
