Abstract

Textile fibrous materials such as cotton, hemp, flax, jute, ramie, wool, silk, viscose or cuprammonium artificial silk, cellulose ester or cellulose ether fibres, fabrics containing mixtures of wool and artificial silk staple fibre, &c. are impregnated with a tertiary nitrogenous base and an x-halogen ether of the formula <FORM:0495830/IV/1> wherein X stands for halogen, R and R1 stand for alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl or aryl radicles and R1 may also stand for hydrogen, or with a quaternary ammonium compound from such an a -halogen ether and a tertiary nitrogenous base. At the same time, or following or preceding this treatment, the textile fibrous materials are impregnated with an aldehyde, a product yielding an aldehyde, a synthetic resin formed by the condensation of an aldehyde with another substance, a water-soluble precondensation product of such a synthetic resin or a mixture of the individual components capable of forming such a synthetic resin. The textile fibrous materials subjected to both impregnations are then heated, if desired, after previously drying. The impregnations may be carried out in the presence of acids such as tartaric, lactic, acetic or oxalic acids, or of substances having an acid reaction such as sodium bisulphate, or of substances which split off acids under the influence of heat. It is stated that textile fibrous materials treated according to the invention are water-repellent, resistant to creasing, and in some cases acquire a soft feel. Quaternary ammonium compounds of a -halogen ethers mentioned are octodecyloxymethyl - pyridinium chloride, hexadecyloxymethyl-pyridinium chloride and dodecyloxymethyl-trimethylammonium chloride, while synthetic resins mentioned are those formed by the condensation of aldehydes with urea, phenol, cresol, resorcinol, catechol or melamine. The precondensation product of a synthetic resin mentioned is dimethylol urea.
