Abstract

495,720. Pneumatic conveyers ; furnaces. NESFIELD, A. C., and DEANE, B. P. F. May 21, 1937, No. 14208. [Class 78 (i)] [Also in Group XII] Comminuted combustible material, such as wood chips, saw-dust, &c. is destroyed by a furnace 38 into which the material is blown from a hopper 10 by a blower 19. The bottom of the hopper is occupied by a delivery drum 12 furnished with projecting spikes 13, and the lower end of the sloping side 11 of the hopper is formed as a hinged flap 25 held closed by snap bolts 26 and adapted to yield outward when the pressure of the material exceeds a certain value to prevent jamming, a spring returning the flap when the pressure is relieved. The drum is driven through worm reduction 16 and a variable speed gear, and delivers the material into an air channel 18 which the air from the blower 19 reaches through a venturi tube 22 fitted with an adjustable lip 24. A choke 44 can be slid to govern the volume of air blown through, and the drum 12 may be interchangeable with others having different diameters of cylinder. A stirrer 28 fitted with projections 29 is reciprocated vertically in the hopper 10 by means of a pitman 35 coupled to a crank-disc 36. The furnace 38 is provided with a sloping baffle wall 42 which may have a curved top to give the air-borne material a whirling motion and nozzles fed by a pipe 43 from the blower 19 may be arranged behind the wall to assist in the same action. The combustion chamber 37 may be made circular, and the furnace may be employed for steam-generation.
