Abstract

495,657. Washing - machines. LITHGOW, J., and CROMPTON, H. June 30, 1937, No. 18146. [Class 138 (ii)] A shaft 17 carrying agitator blades 18 is oscillated within a tub 10 from an electric motor 32 through a reducing gear 31 and vertical shaft 23. Arms 20 extending radially from a slidably mounted shaft 21 engage grooves 19 in the upper end of the shaft 17 under the action of a spring 24, Fig. 5. A .sprocket wheel 25, Fig. 3, is slidably mounted on the shaft 21 so that the latter may be raised to disconnect the drive. The wheel 25 is connected to another sprocket wheel 26 by an endless chain which is provided with a sliding block 29 reciprocated by a connecting rod 28 and eccentric 30 on the vertical shaft 23. The transmission gear is housed in a gear box 22 pivoted about the shaft 23 so that when the drive is disconnected the gear box can be swung clear of the tub 10. The tub is provided with a false bottom and with a dished or conical base 11 having a gas heater 13 or electric heaters 14.
