[Class 44] A device for maintaining a movable member against a stationary member, especially for automobile bonnets, comprises a bent metal rod having one end rigidly secured to the movable member whilst the other end, which forms the operating handle, passes through a slot in the movable member, movement of the handle along the slot causing the rod to be brought into or out of engagement with a fixed hook. One end 2 of a rod 1 is secured to a plate 5 mounted on an automobile bonnet 3 by means of a member 6, channelled to accommodate the rod and riveted or welded to the plate 5, the upper end of the channel being split to form two lugs 10 which are bent at right-angles to the plate to embrace the cranked portion 11 of the rod 1 to prevent the rod from turning in the channel. The free end of the rod passes through a U-shaped slot 12 in the plate 5 to form an operating handle 4 which is urged to the top of either limb of the slot by a vertically disposed spring loop formed by the rod. When the handle 4 is at one end of the slot, the portion 13 of the rod engages a fixed hook 14, the portion 13 being inclined so as to press the bonnet downwards and inwards. The rod is cranked at 16 to limit outward movement of the bonnet due to vibration. Instead of a simple loop, the spring portion may be coiled and may be directed obliquely away from the bonnet. The handle 4 is formed as a loop which may be covered by a plated metal shell to facilitate actuation of the fastening and improve its appearance. In a modification, the spring loop may be disposed horizontally and parallel to the bonnet, the end of one limb being bent so as to lie along two edges of the plate 5, which edges are provided with lugs to clench over the rod. The other limb co-operates with a fixed hook mounted perpendicular to the bonnet and the free end of this limb is bent to pass through a straight vertical slot in the plate 5. The lower edge of the notch of the hook forms an inclined ramp which forces the bonnet outwards when the handle is depressed.
