495,071. Shaping paper containers. JAGENBERG, G. MEYER-, and PLOTZE, A. C. May 1, 1937, No. 27780/38. Divided out of 494,838, [Group III]. [Class 100 (ii)] [Also in Group XVII] Tubular paper or like bodies of containers for oil &c. are provided with conical neck portions by the following means. The open-ended tubular bodies, which may consist of several layers, are disposed over a mandrel 2,Fig. 14, formed with outwardly facing creasing rulers 3 and surrounded by radially movable spring-controlled inwardly facing creasing rulers 4 arranged staggered with respect to the rulers 3. On the rod 8 carrying the tapered guide sleeve 7 being moved downwardly both sets of rulers operate to form the sets of folding lines a, i, Fig. 4. A modified form of creasing device having both sets of rulers fixed is described for used with bodies of stout material. The material between the folding lines is next expanded into pleats which are of rightangled form at the mouth but the sides of which taper gradually into the lower cylindrical part of the body. The pleats are formed by spring-controlled folding rulers 17, Fig. 18, provided on a sleeve 16 and co-operating with recesses in a tool 14 carried by the mandrel 13. The pleated neck is next compressed between sets of two-part dies (not shown) until the pleats are pressed quite flat at the mouth, Fig. 9, and the body is placed on a stepped plunger 61, Fig. 26, which co-operates with a die 60 comprising parts 64, 65 separated by a ring 66 formed in sectors, a groove 67 being provided in the part 65. As the body is pressed forward by the plunger the material is forced into the groove, forming the collar w, and the upper edge is cut clean by co-operation of the plunger part 63 with a cutting device 68.
