Abstract

495,019. Aerials. BORMANN, O. March 4, 1937, No. 6495. Convention date, March 13, 1936. Drawings to Specification. [Class 40 (v)] A short-wave aerial mounted external of and inaccessible from a control chamber an be jettisoned and replaced by a new aerial from within the chamber. The aerial may comprise an array of dipoles which can be passed through an opening in the wall of the chamber, the array opening, by spring pressure or by being inflated with gas or fluid, when in the external position. The aerial may be mounted on a ball and socket joint so that the direction of the beam radiation can be controlled from within the chamber. If the aerial is damaged and cannot be drawn back into the chamber it may be jettisoned by unscrewing a rod conductor which connects the aerial with the apparatus in the chamber, a new aerial being then passed out through the opening in the chamber wall and connected up. Air locks are provided on the wall opening. The invention is described for use on the gondola of a stratosphere balloon.
