Abstract

494,946. Drying yeast &c. COOK, F. H. April 30, 1937, No. 12354. [Class 34 (ii)] Yeast or other solid, e.g. glandular substance, having constituents easily destroyed by rapid drying and high temperatures, is dried by slow downward passage through a chamber up which passes a heated drying atmosphere, the rate of gas flow being so adjusted that the top of the chamber is 5-20‹ F. cooler than the bottom, the range being preferably 90-100‹ F. Yeast is fed at 10 on to a series of horizontal conveyers 12 of gas permeable fabric moving and overlapping as shown, so that the yeast falls from one to the next and finally after 7-8 hours drying passes out at 13. The hot gas, e.g. carbon dioxide, entering at 14, is baffled at 15 and passes out at the top through a gas permeable fabric 18 covering the casing 17. The yeast fed to a hopper 1 is lifted by a machine 3 where it is cut into short threads which are delivered at 10 to the drier. A V-shaped scraper 6 cleans the inside of the belt 2.
