Abstract

494,650. Ball joints ; stuffing-box substitutes. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO., Ltd., BROCK, D. T., and GATES, G. R. G. March 26, 1938, No. 9386. [Class 65 (ii)] [Also in Group XXVI] A universal joint comprising a socket 10 and a stem 12 secured therein by a part-spherical bearing member 13 is kept dust-tight by a rubber boot 21, vulcanized to a flat annular surface 27 of the socket 10 and having a bead 23 which resiliently engages a groove 24 of the stem 12. An annular rib may be formed on the socket 10 inside or outside the surface 27 to protect and support the vulcanized joint. The rubber boot 21 may be of any form and may be vulcanized to the stem 12.
