Abstract

Impure sulphonated products derived from alcohols or olefines containing 10 to 25 carbon atoms or mixtures thereof are freed from undesired constituents by extracting the aqueous solution of the products, after the addition of a water soluble inorganic salt with an ether having six or less carbon atoms in the molecule and boiling at a temperature below 100 DEG C. The extraction may be effected before or after neutralization of the sulphonated products. The wetting and cleansing properties of the products are improved by the purification process. Alcohol containing mixtures, which may contain fatty acids, esters, aldehydes and ketones as impurities and are suitable as starting materials for the sulphonation may be obtained by the reduction of fatty oils and waxes and free fatty acids such as oleic, linoleic, train oil, cotton seed and sunflower seed fatty acids. Oxidation products of aliphatic hydrocarbons of high molecular weight such as paraffin oil or wax and montan wax may also be used. In an example, an alcohol mixture obtained from oxidized scale wax, is sulphated in the presence of petroleum ether, after extraction and hydrogenation, and is neutralized with caustic soda. Trisodium phosphate is first added to maintain a constant pH value and then sodium sulphate, before extracting four times with diethylether to remove the unsulphated and unsulphatable material. The extraction may be carried out continuously, by passing the sulphated mixture containing the inorganic salt down a tower packed with balls of quartz, glass or other ceramic material, while passing the ether solvent upwards through the tower. When sufficient inorganic salts are formed by the neutralization of the sulphonated products, further inorganic salts need not be added. Before the sulphonation, saponifiable constituents when present may be removed. Specifications 324,189, [Class 2 (iii)], 352,537, 356,731, 407,990, and 453,134 are referred to.
