494,046. Turning - gear. ECLIPSE AVIATION CORPORATION. Aug. 10, 1937, No. 22019. Convention date, Aug. 31, 1936. [Class 7 (v)] In an engine starter in which fluid pressure acting on a piston 21 causes engagement and rotation of a driving clutch 15, 11, auxiliary means is provided for causing both meshing and driving operation independently of the fluidactuated piston. As shown, the piston 21 is secured to a sleeve 22 externally splined at 23 to engage a splined sleeve 20, which is secured to the cylinder 17 by a split clamp 47 attaching the cylinder to a casing 10 bolted on the engine crank-case 13. The sleeve 22 is connected to a sleeve 27 carrying the clutch member 15 by helical grooves 28, 29, these grooves and the splines 23 being provided with anti-friction balls. The clutch member 15 is connected to the sleeve 27 by a sleeve 106 and a friction sleeve 107 having an oblique slot engaged by a pin 108 on the sleeve 106 ; the sleeve portion of the member 15 also has ratchet teeth engaged by similar teeth on a spring-pressed clutch element 98 splined on the sleeve 106. Operation independently of the piston 21 is effected by means of a worm shaft 71, driven by hand or power, and a worm wheel 74 forming part of an adjustable multiple-disc clutch 77, which is connected to the sleeve portion of the clutch 15 by ratchet-tooth clutch elements 84, 94. When the shaft 71 is driven, the sleeve portion of the clutch member 15 will override the ratchet clutch element 98, and axial engagement of 'the members 15, 11 will be effected by the pin 108 and slotted sleeve 107. When the piston 21 is actuated by gases from an explosive cartridge, admitted by an inlet pipe 48 and slots 50, it moves the clutch member axially by means of a spring ball connection 111 between sleeves 33, 27 and then effects rotation by means of the threaded connection 29, 28. At the end of the piston stroke, the cylinder 17 is exhausted through ports 60, an exhaust ring 62, pipe 61 and exhaust valve 52, and the piston is returned by a spring 42.
