Abstract

In the distillation of organic substances, particularly vitamins, sterols and hormones, under a high vacuum to obtain a plurality of fractions, a carrier liquid (or liquids) is added capable of yielding distillate fractions equal in number to the fractions required from the distilland and of which one distils contemporaneously with each of the desired fractions, from which it must be readily separable by physical or chemical means. If desired, the number of carrier liquid fractions may be increased to provide intermediate flushing liquids. Examples are (1) the distillation of sterol-containing oils to obtain cholestane and stigmasterol, using as carrier liquid a mixture of tripalmitin and tricaproin or dicaproin monopalmitin; (2) the separation of free vitamin D from vitamin A esters by distillation with monocaproin dipalmitin and triolein; (3) the separation of benzpyrene from cholesteryl butyrate by molecular distillation, with oleic acid and triolein as carrier liquids; and (4) separation of indigo from dibromindigo, using dicaproin monopalmitin and triolein as carrier liquids. Specifications 476,134 and 482,881 are referred to.ALSO:In the distillation of organic substances particularly sterols, vitamins and hormones under high vacuum to obtain a plurality of fractions, a carrier liquid (or liquids) is added capable of yielding distillate fractions equal in number to the fractions required from the distilland, and of which one distils with each of the desired fractions from which it must be readily separable by chemical or physical means.
