[Class 78 (i)] In conveyers or elevators of the en masse type the flights are carried by one or more chains having short links, i.e. such that a plurality of whole links lie between each flight. Figs. 8, 12, 13, and 14 show different forms that the flights 8 may take, the flight in each case following the outline of the channel 1 through which it runs, with small but adequate clearance, and the chain being connected thereto at a point such that substantially similar depths of flight lie on each side of the chain. Fig. 1 shows an elevator in which the material enters at a hopper 6 and passes up a wide leg 3 to discharge at a shoot 5. The flights 8, pivoted at 8A to two parallel short-linked chains 7, are turned by a drum 11 on the driving sprocket shaft 10 to bring them into parallel relation with the chains for the return passage down a narrow leg 4. The leg 4 spreads away from the leg 3 part way down, and rails 13 receive the chains 7, gravity and the material entering at hopper 6 here turning the flights into their effective position on the chains. The device may be arranged as part elevator and part conveyer, or wholly conveyer, and may be slung into a hold, &c. Fig. 11 shows a conveyer in which the flights do not fold back and in which the chains are tensioned by guide pulleys 33 mounted on jockey levers 33A pivoted on the axis of sprockets 34 and urged by a spring 35, preferably adjustable. The chain tension may alternatively be maintained by a jockey device near the driving sprockets. The flights may be of skeleton form.
