Abstract

Steel made in a Bessemer converter at a higher temperature than usual is refined by adding to such steel materials to form a slag of low fusion point which are melted by the heat of the metal. These materials have a lower fusion point than the slag used in the converter and consist of lime and/or dolomite and one or more of fluorspar, soda and silica. In an example 20 tons of steel from a converter are poured into a ladle containing 2 cwts. of soda ash, 50-100 lb. of silica, 50-100 of lime and 50 of fluorspar. Specification 474,224 is referred to.
