Abstract

A composition containing rubber and a reinforcing pigment such as carbon black or zinc oxide and it may be other ingredients but no vulcanizing agent, is heated, preferably under static conditions and to substantially a vulcanizing temperature, e.g. 260 to 360 DEG F., for from six to two hours in an inert gas or in vacuo. During the heating the carbon black migrates and collects in floccules forming a reticulated network or chain structure interspersed with rubber containing a lower proportion of carbon black. The composition may then be mixed with further rubber and/or compounding ingredients, any such admixed composition preferably containing compounding ingredients in the same proportions as in that of the treated batch. The treated batch, with or without this further admixture may then be milled with vulcanizing agents and vulcanized. The resulting product compared with a non-treated composition, is softer, of the same tensile strength, of higher wearing or abrasion resisting quality, with lower hysteresis loss, and consequently a lower running temperature when flexed, as in a tyre tread for the manufacture of which it may be used.
