Abstract

492,615. Tripod stands. TAGG, W. April 6, 1937, Nos. 9691 and 28417. [Class 52 (v)] The legs c of a tripod terminate at their upper ends in balls c<1> enclosed in a two-part member a, b. The supporting plate d<4> is carried by a ball d<1> which projects from the member a and rests on a diaphragm e having a central aperture. The friction between the balls and associated parts is so regulated by adjusting the parts a, b which are screwed together that the legs and plate d<4> will remain in any position in which they are placed. The diaphragm e may be dispensed with, the member a, b being filled with small balls or shot which may be pressed in all directions to adjust the friction by means of a screw passing through the wall of the member a. Fig. 6 shows a modification in which the friction required to hold the legs and plate d<4> in any position is obtained by means of a spring-pressed ball g which forces the ball d' upwards against a seating a<4> formed in the member a. The ball g can be pressed downwards to relieve the friction by pressing upon the ball d<1> or member a. An adaptor i fits on a depending portion b<2> of the member b and is provided with a screw-threaded hole i<1> to enable the tripod to be attached to a second tripod having longer legs than the legs c. The adaptor i may be removed and the tripod screwed into a sheath h as shown in Fig. 7, the adaptor i then forming the bottom of the sheath.
