Abstract
An aluminium alloy piston is provided with a surface oxide coating impregnated with graphite. The piston may be cast from an alloy containing 10-19 per cent of silicon, 0,5-5 per cent of copper, 0,2-3 per cent of magnesium, 0,3-5 per cent of nickel, and balance aluminium. After machining, the piston is immersed in an electrolyte containing 20 per cent sulphuric acid and 5 per cent oxalic acid, and with the piston as anode, a current of 13 amps. per square foot is applied at 14 volts for thirty minutes. The resulting oxide coating is then coated with a suspension of deflocculated graphite, e.g. that known under the Registered Trade Mark "Aquadag" diluted with six times its volume of water.
