Abstract

492,227. Pivoted - sliding windows. KIEFER, J. Nov. 22, 1937, No. 32081. [Class 20 (iii)] The guide channels in the frame members of a window provided with pivoted-sliding sashes which lie approximately in one plane when the window is closed, are so shaped that during the initial opening movement of a sash, the lower rail thereof is first moved approximately vertically upwards and then moved inwardly, the vertical movement being accompanied by a simultaneous oblique inward and upward movement of the upper rail. In the constructiori shown in Fig. 3, in which the lower sash 2 is slid upwardly to open the window, the lower portion of each of the guide channels for the sash pins 4 is straight and upwardly inclined, the channels for the sash pins 3 being formed with initial curved portions to impart the desired movements to the lower sash rail. Fig. 10 shows a construction in which the bottom sash is lowered into a well 18 below the level of the window. Each upper guide channel comprises an upwardly inclined portion 21 and a downward substantially vertical portion 22, while each lower guide channel 20 comprises an initial semicircular portion. In order that the upper sash pins may not fall back into the inclined portions 21 of the guide channels at the beginning of the downward movement of the sash, an additional guide pin 23, Fig. 12, is provided at each upper corner of the sash, which during the downward movement bears against the outer limb of a guide member 24 attached to the frame, until the pin 4 passes the junction of the channels 21, 22. The sash pins 4 may be withdrawn from the guide channels to enable the sash to pivot about the lower pins 3, for the purpose of cleaning the outside surface of the window pane.
