[Class 60] A machine for grinding articles, for example milling-cutters, wheels, patterns, &c., to forms which are reduced scale copies of a pattern or template comprises an arm 1 pivoted at one end at 2 on a bed 4 and carrying pivots 5, 6, with their axes in a plane with the axis of the pivot 2. The pivots 5, 6 respectively have secured to them equal levers 7, 8 connected by a rod 10 so that both pivots may have equal rotary motion, or in place of the levers, &c., the pivots may be geared together by chain gearing &c. ; the pivot 5 carries the work 13 and the pivot 6 carries a template 14. The arm 1 is urged towards a stop roller 19, which engages the template 14, by a spring or by a weight 15 and a cord 16, the roller 19 being carried by a slide 20 adjustable transversely on a part 21 of the bed 4, and on the bed also is a headstock 23 having slidable transversely thereon, by a screw 25, a support 24 carrying the spindle 27 of a grinding-wheel 28. The machine is set up so that the ratio of the distances of the operative points of the wheel and the roller 19 from the axis of the pivot 2 is equal to that of the distances of the corresponding points on the work and the template, and so that the respective points on the wheel and roller are in a vertical plane with the axis of the pivot 2, by means of a mandrel which is fitted in an axial bore 29 in the spindle 5, the mandrel having fitted thereon a gauge or a circular disc, and the grinding-wheel being adjusted longitudinally and transversely. The article 13 to be ground is carried by a pivot 32 rotatable in an arm 31 on a slide 30 carried by the pivot 5, whereby cut can be put on the work. The pattern 14 and the work are rotated or oscillated on their pivots by a handle 33 connected to the arm 8, or by disengageable worm gearing 35..38. In order to make a pattern from an existing article the grinding-wheel is replaced by a metal replica thereof and the article is maintained in contact therewith and moved thereover, the pattern being marked off from the roller 19 or ground by a grinding-wheel substituted for the roller. The grinding-wheel may be trued by a diamond mounted on the mandrel in the spindle 5. According to the Provisional Specification, the article to be ground need not rotate during grinding.
