Abstract

Acetylene is produced by the incomplete combustion of gaseous or vaporized hydrocarbons by bringing together separately heated hydrocarbons and oxygen. The temperature of the mixture is at least equal to the normal ignition temperature. The speed of flow of the mixture is so high that the formation of flame does not take place until some distance from the place of mixing is reached. The amount of oxygen is such that a flame is formed after mixing has been completed. The oxygen may be preheated. In an example, a current of methane at 750 DEG C. is led through a tube of 4 cm. diameter at a speed of 10 meters per second. A current of oxygen heated to 750 DEG C. is led into the methane current through a tube of 0,9 cm. diameter at a speed of 100 meters per second, in such amount that the gas mixture contains 40 per cent of oxygen. The mixture then flows at a speed of 30 meters per second into a wider reaction chamber where a flame forms. For each part of methane there is obtained about two parts by volume of a gas mixture containing 8,5 to 9 per cent of acetylene. Specification 408,691 is referred to.
