Abstract
491,513. Securing wheels on shafts ; toothed gearing. BAILEY, R. W. H. March 3, 1937, No. 6341. [Classes 80 (i) and so (ii)] Relates to gearing in which a central wheel meshes with surrounding planets or idler wheels and consists in means for mounting the central wheel that it may move in a plane normal to the shaft. As applied to a reduction gearing for driving an airscrew, the crankshaft A has an extension A<1> and drives a series of four double idlers B, B<1> through a central wheel C, the idlers B<1> meshing with an annulus D on the airscrew shaft D<1>. At the end of the shaft A<1> are external splines E which engage internal splines on a sleeve E<1> which is prevented from moving towards the airscrew by a split ring E<2>. At the other end, the sleeve carries external splines which engage internal splines in the central wheel C. A shoulder E4 on sleeve E<1> limits movement of the latter away from the airscrew. The flange portion of the shaft A<1> has, bolted to it, a split ring F<2> a projecting annular flange F<3> on which enters a groove in the boss of the central wheel to prevent it from moving axially and to limit its radial movement. The groove and flange may be interchanged.
