Abstract
488,417. Fumigating; preserving rice &c. GUARDITE CORPORATION. Oct. 2, 1936, No. 24056. Convention date, June 5. [Classes 49 and 81 (i)] [Also in Group I] In the fumigation of organic products, e.g. rice, in an enclosed chamber with a plurality of fumigating gases such as a mixture of ethylene oxide and carbon dioxide, one of which is preferentially absorbed by said organic products, the chamber is substantially completely evacuated. and the gases introduced in a number of jets spaced about the chamber so that no object or part thereof to be fumigated is substantially more than the diameter, and preferably the radius of the chamber distant from the point of entrance of the jet closest to said object or part thereof. The term diameter " means the longest cross-sectional measurement of the chamber. An elongated rectangular chamber is provided with a corner plate 18 extending throughout the length of each longitudinal edge and forming a closed conduit 22 from which fumigating gases supplied by pipes 21, 24, 25, 26 issue through apertures 28 which increase in size in accordance with the distance from the gas inlet. The chamber after filling is evacuated to about ¢-1 in. of mercury and the fumigating gases then introduced, generally until the pressure is 10-20 ins. The gases are preferably removed and conducted back over the products as described in Specification 488,418.
