Abstract

487,975. Conveyers. LOGAN, W. A. March 22, 1937, No. 8306, [Class 78 (i)] A conveyer for use in methods of milling in which the coal is broken down behind the mining machine as the latter cuts along the face comprises a number of units of tray, pan, trough or like form which are adapted to be telescoped one within the other at the rear of the machine and to be extended behind the machine and loaded as the machine advances. Means are provided for traversing the train of extended loaded units to a delivery position, discharging them, and returning the train to the machine. The unit A, Fig. 1, has four wheels and supports the left-hand end of the unit A<1> which has two wheels only. A longitudinal bar 4 on the underside of the bottom of the unit A<1> fits between a pair of similar bars 3 on the unit A, and is connected thereto by the engagement of a pin 6 with slots 5. A belt B which is passed round a drum 17, Fig. 4, at the rear of the mining machine C extends within the units A, A<1> and has a bar 8 at each end to which haulage cables 9, 10 are connected. The cable 9 is led round sheaves 20 carried by a ramp 19 extending from the machine to a winding drum 16, and the cable 10 is led over a drum 21 on the discharge structure E and around sheaves 24 to a similar winch 15. At the commencement of operations, the units are in telescoped condition with their wheels on the ramp 19 and their latches 7 engaged with catches 18 on the machine. As the machine advances, coal is fed by the loader 14 to the belt, and as loading proceeds, the unit A<1> is drawn out of the unit A, and the belt is drawn more and more from below the units round the drum 17 on to the floor of the units. When the left-hand end of the belt reaches the end of the units its left-hand bar 8 engages with the latches 7 of the unit A, and since just prior to this engagement, the righthand bar 8 has become engaged by the latches 7 of the unit A<1> after disengaging them from the catches 18, both ends of the belt are now attached to the fully extended units. Further haulage causes the units to travel to the discharge station where abutments 23 trip the left-hand latches 7 and release the belt. Since the unit A is stopped by the structure E, the units telescope, and the belt is drawn over the roller 21 to discharge its load on to the gate conveyer F. Specification 411,256, [Group XXI], is referred to.
