[Classes 120 (i) and 120 (iii)] Apparatus for serrating fibrous material such as set forth in the parent Specification and in Specification 461,712, and particularly for serrating or breaking flax stalks, comprises a pair of short rollers A, A<1> of relatively large diameter, e.g. eight to twelve inches, pressed. into contact by springs at each end of the upper roller shaft, the roller A being provided with stout, deep flanges B at each end between which the roller A closely fits and a serrating blade D<1> mounted on arms D pivoted on the upper roller shaft fitting closely between the flanges B with one edge abutting against the periphery of the upper roller A<1> and the other edge resting upon a fixed plate D<2> held in close contact against the surface of the bottom roller A. Alternatively the bottom roller may be flanged. The blade D<1> is adjustably secured to a swivelling bracket K mounted on a bar L secured in the ends of the arms D, and is pressed downwards by a spring d acting through a spindle N and a ball-joint M. The material is fed to the rollers A, A<1> over a feed plate E, F by fluted rollers C, C<1> and after serration between the blade D<1>, the plate D<2> and the flanges B is delivered by a pair of rollers or by pairs E<1>E<2>, F<1>F<2> which straighten out the serrated material.
